India captain Rohit Sharma has tested positive for Covid under a week out from his side's Test against England.

The five-match series, which came to an abrupt halt on the morning of the final Test last September, is due to conclude at Edgbaston from July 1.

If Rohit, who is in isolation at India's team hotel, adheres to the same protocols as are in place for the current series between England and New Zealand, he will be out of action for five days, placing his participation in doubt.

"Team India captain Mr Rohit Sharma has tested positive for COVID-19 following a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) conducted on Saturday," said a BCCI statement.

"He is currently in isolation at the team hotel and is under the care of the BCCI Medical Team. An RT-PCR test will be conducted on Sunday to ascertain his CT value."

Rohit, who featured in a warmup match against Leicestershire, is the second India player to be affected by Covid since the start of their tour, with Ravichandran Ashwin's arrival delayed by his own positive test before departing India.

England's series against New Zealand has also been impacted by Covid; England are without batting coach Marcus Trescothick at Headingley, while Ben Foakes tested positive on the third evening, with Sam Billings called up as a Covid substitute for the remainder of the third Test. New Zealand were without Kane Williamson for the second Test at Trent Bridge, while both Devon Conway and Michael Bracewell tested positive between games.
