Old Trafford: England 259, India 261-5 - India won by five wickets

Scorecard

Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant were on form at Emirates Old Trafford to steer India to a five-wicket victory and wrap up a 2-1 series win.

Pandya picked up 4 for 24 with the ball and scored 71 runs while Pant finished unbeaten on 125.

Batting first, England were in trouble early, Mohammed Siraj (replacing Jasprit Bumrah) striking twice in quick succession to remove Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root for three-ball ducks.

Jason Roy, who hit three of his first four balls to the boundary, however, rebuilt the innings with Ben Stokes, putting on 54 runs for the third wicket.

Seeking to wrestle back momentum, India tossed the ball to Pandya and the allrounder delivered the goods, dismissing both players in quick succession: England 74 for 4.

Jos Buttler and Moeen Ali enjoyed a steady, but not exactly mesmerising, 75-run stand to get England back on track before Liam Livingstone arrived to kick the innings into life with a flurry of boundaries.

However, after sending Pandya for two sixes, he too fell under the bowler's spell, picking out Ravindra Jadeja in the deep. And the pairing combined once again three balls later, Jadeja taking a fine diving catch to remove Buttler for 60.

A 48-run partnership off 41 balls between David Willey and Craig Overton kept England ticking over before Yuzvendra Chahal wrapped up the tail, the spinner picking up the final three wickets. England all out for a below par 259 with 4.1 overs untouched.

In reply, Reece Topley excelled in the powerplay, dispensing with Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to finish his first spell with figures of 3 for 15 from five overs.

Suryakumar Yadav was the next to fall, caught behind by Buttler off Overton for 16, before Pant and Pandya combined to take the game away from England, putting on 133 runs off 115 balls for the fifth wicket.

And frustratingly for England, both players should have been dismissed, Buttler missing a stumping to remove Pant early doors and Overton caught in no man’s land in the deep when Pandya was on six.

Pandya was eventually dismissed for 71 (55) , caught inside the circle by a diving Stokes, but Pant was unstoppable, ramping up the pace to bring up his century off 106 balls and see India home with 47 balls to spare.
