Mark Stoneman and James Vince look set to be granted a stay of execution when England visit New Zealand.

The two batsmen had inconsistent series in Australia - Vince making 242 runs at 26.88 and Stoneman 232 at 25.77 - and there have been calls to replace the pair for the two Tests against the Blackcaps in March and April.

However, England coach Trevor Bayliss has suggested that both men will get another opportunity to prove themselves.

"Stoneman and Vince do deserve a bit more of a chance," Bayliss said.

"They were playing against one of the best attacks in the world in their home conditions."

James Vince and Mark Stoneman both averaged below 27 during the Ashes

Reflecting on England's 4-0 Ashes defeat in Australia, Bayliss insisted that he was happy with the overall performance of his players.

"Could we have come here with anyone different that could have helped us play any better? I don’t think we could have done," he said.

"We were outplayed by a good team in their home conditions. You have to give them credit.

"We've known for a couple of years that we have been three or four performing players short of a very, very good team. [Dawid] Malan has probably cemented one of the spots.

"Vince and Stoneman will be disappointed that they weren’t able to capitalise. We’ve known for a while that we haven’t got a world-class spinner, and we have to work through that process."
