Ex-England captain says keeper's stunning hundred shows there is no one better than him among middle-order batsmen in white-ball cricket
Jos Buttler scored a magnificent hundred against Australia in Sydney
Michael Vaughan says Jos Buttler’s sensational century for England in Sydney proves he is the world’s best middle order batsman in one-day cricket.
Buttler’s unbeaten 100, made from 83 balls at the SCG, helped his country to a formidable total of 302 for six on Sunday.
It was the slowest of his five ODI tons - three of the others feature in the four fastest ever made by Englishmen - but provided a timely reminder of his potency in the latter overs.
And Vaughan is convinced there is no one better batting at No 5 or below.
"Buttler’s done this before for England. I remember in Dubai against Pakistan he just exploded from 50 to 100," the former England captain told BT Sport.
Michael Vaughan says Buttler is unrivaled in his role
"He’s just got the gift, hasn’t he. I don’t there’s a better middle order batsman in world white-ball cricket.
"The Indians will go nuts because they’ll say ‘there’s MS Dhoni’. Well, I think Buttler’s just gone ahead of MS Dhoni because of his approach and because of the power he brings."
Buttler shared in an unbroken seventh-wicket partnership of 113 with Chris Woakes to lift England past 300 at the SCG - an impressive effort given the tourists were 200 for six from 40 overs.
"Timing is everything," said Vaughan.
"The timing for his team today - they were in a difficult situation - it was a very special partnership led by an unbelievable century from Jos."
