England opener says England can win games on this tour
Mark Stoneman says victory at Melbourne is not beyond England and the two sides are ‘fairly balanced’.
Stoneman – who has scored 193 runs at 32.16 in the series – told BBC Sport England are “capable of winning games here.”
"It by no means felt an unachievable task and going to Melbourne we'll give everything to get a positive result."
Asked if Australia are a superior team, the Surrey opener said: "In all honesty no, we're two sides of fairly balanced bowling attacks."
After three Tests Australia’s four-man attack has taken 59 wickets. The six recognised bowlers used by England have combined for 34.
Stoneman has hit two fifties at the top of the order
"They have maybe had us covered at times in the pace department but when we've had the ball moving we've shown we're able to put their batsmen under a lot of pressure and at times with the bat as well we've been putting runs on the board, but just not enough.”
England will walk out at the MCG already 3-0 down in the series, with only pride to play for, but Stoneman insists that the situation the tourists find themselves in is not through a lack of effort.
"Despite what's being reported in matters off-field this group has really worked hard and it's just those key moments each time they've managed to get the upper hand on us."
