Quinton de Kock scores 107 as The Proteas' new era begins with a seven-wicket hammering of the world champions
World champions England were give a reality check on their return to 50-over action after being swatted aside by South Africa in the first one-day international at Centurion.
The hosts chased down 259 to win with 14 balls remaining to go 1-0 up in the series, thanks to captain Quinton de Kock's magical 107.
Temba Bavuma struck 98 as part of a partnership with the skipper worth 173 for the second wicket before a cameo from Rassie van der Dussen (38 not out) secured the win.
England had earlier mustered just 258 for 8 from their 50 overs, with Joe Denly's 87 helping them recover from 131 for 6.
Tabraiz Shamsi tore through the middle-order with 3-38, while Van der Dussen ran-out Joe Root amid a dismal display from Eoin Morgan's men.
Indeed, it said much about the Proteas' performance that Bavuma's failure to go to what would have been a second ODI century in three outings was the only negative on an otherwise encouraging day.
The two sides clash in the second ODI at Kingsmead on February before the series concludes at The Wanderers on February 9.
