Earlier, Jordan Hermann hit 103 as South Africa posted 278 in their first innings to lead by 85.

Eddie Jack and Henry Crocombe both took four wickets, but England were frustrated by a last-wicket stand of 55 between Dane Paterson and Codi Yusuf.
Paterson and Tian van Vuuren then took two wickets apiece to leave England in trouble going into day three. The not-out batters are top scorer Rehan Ahmed on 44 and Ekansh Singh, who is unbeaten on 15.
