England received an injury scare on Thursday when Jason Roy was briefly forced out of a warm-up match in Sydney with a hand problem.

Four days ahead of the opening one-day international against Australia, Roy was fielding at gully against a Cricket Australia XI when he dropped a sharp chance off Jake Carder at the Drummoyne Oval.

In doing so, the opening batsmen appeared to hurt his left hand and seemed to be in pain for the rest of the over before leaving the field.

He returned around half-an-hour later in some discomfort and later opened the batting. England will be hoping the Surrey man is okay for the first of five ODIs Down Under.

The Cricket Australia XI were restricted to 258 from their 50 overs, as Moeen Ali returned miserly figures of 2-28. Travis Head hit 62 from 63 balls while teenager Mackenzie Harvey smashed an entertaining 59 from 48.

England have struggled with injuries throughout their time in Australia.

Toby Roland-Jones was ruled out of the Ashes series in the autumn, Steve Finn had to return home after less than two weeks and Craig Overton sustained a cracked rib on debut in Adelaide.

Joe Root, meanwhile, has been afflicted by an illness which caused him to retire from the second innings of the fifth Test in Sydney.
