Jonathan Trott, Jeetan Patel and Graeme Welch will join England’s coaching setup for the three-Test series against Pakistan.

The trio – all with strong Warwickshire connections – have all worked with the national side in recent times: Trott has been appointed as batting consultant, with Graham Thorpe returning to his role of Chris Silverwood’s assistant alongside Paul Collingwood.

Jeetan Patel, who has worked with England’s spinners since last winter’s tour of New Zealand, will work as a spin consultant from the second Test, while Warwickshire bowling coach Graeme Welch will work with England’s seamers.

Trott spent part of his winter with England Lions in Australia. Nottinghamshire wicketkeeper Tom Moores, who played under him on that trip, told The Cricketer of Trott’s coaching style: “He offered me a different view to my game.

“Whereas my game can be quite fast-paced, extravagant, aggressive – especially because it’s a white-ball tour, he was quite good for me in getting me to keep all of that but also offering me a more rounded approach to the defensive side of the game a bit more. You can attack in defence, can’t you, in a one-day game?”

James Bracey, who was also part of that tour, added to The Cricketer: “He’s known for his preparation and his meticulous nature around his routines and how he approaches his practice. To see that first-hand and to see him explain it to me was again a really big development for me.”
