England will be without Jofra Archer for the remainder of 2021 following the recurrence of a stress fracture in his right elbow.

The 26-year-old will therefore miss the remaining India LV=Insurance Tests, the T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates and the Ashes series in Australia.

Archer, who underwent surgery to remove a bone fragment in his elbow in May, complained of discomfort while playing for Sussex in the T20 Blast and the Royal London One-Day Cup warm-up against Oxfordshire.

Subsequent scans have revealed he has suffered a fresh stress fracture, similar to the one which he suffered in South Africa, and ruled him out of the Sri Lanka tour as well as the Indian Premier League.

He will take an extended break from cricket before being assessed in the early autumn.

The injury also rules Archer out of featuring for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL when the tournament resumes in September, Sussex in their T20 Blast and County Championship campaign or Southern Brave in the men's Hundred.

Joe Root will be without one of his premier seamers for the two biggest challenges of the year

The absence of the Barbados-born seamer is a substantial blow to an England team that is already without talisman Ben Stokes, who has taken an indefinite break from cricket.

It will deprive England of one of their premier seamers for the three biggest challenges of the year, including the campaign to regain the Ashes urn Down Under.

Archer had already been left out of the squad for the first two India Tests and reports earlier this week suggested a specialist had been consulted to assess his fitness.

Multiple media reports also claimed the right-arm quick would not play again in 2021, though Archer dismissed these at the time as "clickbait at best".
