James Anderson will miss the remainder of the South Africa Test series after England's all-time Test wicket-taker was forced out with a left rib injury.

The 37-year-old underwent an MRI scan on Wednesday following the second Test victory in Cape Town.

Anderson only bowled nine overs on day five as England prevailed by 189 runs, due to the problem.

And scans have revealed the extent of the damage which will force him to return to the UK in the coming days.

Somerset's Craig Overton will remain in South Africa as cover for the rest of the series.

Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are both fit-again and could come into the XI for the third Test in Port Elizbeth, which starts next Thursday (January 16).
