Jack Leach is expected to be discharged from hospital on Monday, having been admitted over the weekend.

The England spinner has been suffering with gastroenteritis; he began feeling unwell on Saturday morning.

Leach had been expected to take part in England’s second Test against New Zealand in Hamilton, having played in the innings defeat at Mount Maunganui.

However, he was a surprise omission from the side after Joe Root opted to pick five seamers, rather than include Leach’s left-arm spin.

An England and Wales Cricket Board statement said: “Jack Leach's health has improved since being admitted to hospital on Saturday.

“He will continue to be monitored and assessed by the England medical team and the local medical authorities. He remains in hospital and is expected to be discharged later today.

“He will fly home with the rest of the touring party on Wednesday.”
