England’s Learning Disability team sealed a 3-0 series win over Australia with a 42-run victory in the final ODI at Dauth Park, Brisbane.
Tayler Young top scored for the tourists, hitting a patient 58 from 74 balls, putting on 92 with Rob Hewitt (38 not out) for the fifth wicket. Jack Perry fell just shy of a half century, stumped for a run-a-ball 48, as England set the hosts 241 to win from their 40 overs.
Australia’s reply started well, with Boyd Duffield and Gavan Hicks opening the innings with a partnership of 113 from 22 overs.
When Duffield fell for 65, England restricted the scoring rate with just 85 runs scored from the remaining 18 overs. Hicks also passed 50; dismissed for 66 with four overs left.
Young picked up two wickets in the innings, with Ronnie Jackson and Chris Edwards taking one each as Australia finished on 198 for 4.
Young said: “I’m really pleased with my performance with the bat. I don’t normally get opportunities like that but the coaches showed their belief in me and I took the opportunity with both hands.
“It was a bit of a slow start, but as we went on I found my way and hit my maiden 50.”
England and Australia will now play a five-match IT20 series as part of the INAS Global Games – a multi-sport event for athletes with intellectual disabilities.
