The Durham bowler suffered an intercostal injury in England's World Cup final victory over New Zealand at Lord's on Sunday
England bowler Mark Wood has been ruled out of action for four to six weeks with a side strain.
The Durham paceman left the field after completing his 10-over spell in Sunday's World Cup final against New Zealand at Lord's before he was run out without facing a ball to send the game into a super over.
However, Wood's problem has now been confirmed as an intercostal injury that not only rules him out of the Test match against Ireland but also out of the first Ashes Test - which begins on August 1 at Edgbaston.
Fellow quick bowler Jofra Archer, who bowled the super over in the final, has also join Wood in being sidelined with a side injury.
The 24-year-old, who is uncapped at Test level, has not been included in the squad to face Ireland and will travel to Barbados for a short break before returning ahead of the Ashes, for which he remains very much in contention.
The Test match between England and Ireland begins on Wednesday, July 24 at Lord's.
