England can dominate like the All Blacks after World Cup success, believes Jonny Bairstow

The wicketkeeper sees an experienced core as key to future success ahead of the five-match T20 tour of New Zealand, starting on Friday

Jonny Bairstow hopes England's recent World Cup success is just the beginning for an All Blacks-style dynasty on the international circuit.

Having been ousted from the Test setup after averaging 19.45 across a miserable summer against Ireland and Australia, Bairstow opened his account for the five-match T20 tour of New Zealand with an unbeaten 78 off 45 balls in the opening warm-up in Lincoln on Sunday.

Playing as a senior figure in the side alongside first-time tourers Tom Banton, Pat Brown and Saqib Mahmood, he says the nucleus of experience and depth of talent in the English system makes it a "fascinating period" to be part of the international side.

Following their maiden World Cup win at Lord's in July, Bairstow believes England can follow a similar path to the New Zealand rugby union side (nicknamed the All Blacks), who won back-to-back World Cups in 2011 and 2015.

"There's some very, very talented guys that have played a lot of cricket now for England that are all together and have the experience of going through the ups, the downs and everything in between," Bairstow said.

"I think if you look at the All Blacks in the two previous World Cups, the amount of caps they had leading into those tournaments, there's a reason why they were successful.

"Vice versa, there's a reason why we have the processes we have implemented and the way in which we're going about our training, our fitness levels and everything like that is heading in the right direction."

New coach Chris Silverwood watches on as England prepare for New Zealand T20s

Ahead of Friday's opening T20 international against the Blackcaps in Christchurch, Bairstow looks set to sit out from the final warm-up fixture to allow for maiden senior appearances for Lewis Gregory and Matt Parkinson.

Sam Curran, Chris Jordan and Adil Rashid also look set to rest on Tuesday at the Bert Sutcliffe Oval, clearing room in the XI for Dawid Malan and Tom Curran to make their first appearances of the winter tour.

With next October's T20 World Cup offering England another shot at a white-ball title, the five-match series against a New Zealand side hungry for revenge after the dramatic finish to the World Cup in July offers a phenomenal chance to make an early mark under new coach Chris Silverwood.

"[New Zealand are] dangerous no matter what," Bairstow added. "We'll be expecting a very tough challenge and that's every time you play against New Zealand because they've got quality all the way through.

"They are a great bunch of fellas but naturally what happened at Lord's is going to be quite tough for those guys and there will be a fire in their belly and a hunger to put things right."

Bairstow, who was recently named as the centrally-contracted player for Welsh Fire in The Hundred, also sees the imminent short-form calendar as ideal preparation for next winter's World Cup in Australia and the lucrative domestic circuit alike.

"You've got guys playing T20 in competitions around the world – whether that be the Indian Premier League, Big Bash (in Australia) or whatever it may be – so I'm not too sure [a limited 12-month preparation] is going to make too much of a difference.

"Then you've got The Hundred that's starting next year, so that's an even shorter format that will allow people to put their skills on show to potentially push for that squad."

England's tour of New Zealand will feature five T20Is starting from November 1, before the teams play a two-Test series outside the World Test Championship at Mount Maunganui and Seddon Park from November 21.
