England v West Indies - 3rd Test, day 2: Talking Points
Emirates Old Trafford (day 2 of 5): England 369, West Indies 137-6 - West Indies trail by 232 runs with four first-innings wickets remaining
England took complete control of the third Test against West Indies at Emirates Old Trafford as Stuart Broad entertained with both bat and ball.
Broad clubbed a rapid half-century from No.10 to pull England away from the edge of collapse and to a total of some substance on day two in Manchester, before claiming two wickets as the Windies stumbled to 137 for 6 in reply.
The stalwart seamer's 62 from 45 deliveries included the third fastest fifty by an Englishman - from 33 balls - as the home side recovered from 280 for 8 to reach 369.
It was a crucial intervention from Broad, after England had lost four wickets for 18 runs in just three and a half overs early in the first session - Ollie Pope was bowled by Shannon Gabriel having failed to add to his overnight score of 91, Chris Woakes chopped on to give Kemar Roach his 200th Test wicket, Jos Buttler edged to Jason Holder off Gabriel, and Jofra Archer was pouched by the West Indies skipper off Roach to leave the hosts reeling.
In a partnership of 76 for the ninth wicket, Broad thrashed nine fours and one high-and-mighty six over midwicket. West Indies, who for so much of this series have been accomplished in the field, looked punchdrunk.
Eventually, Broad hoiked a Roston Chase full toss to midwicket to end the fun, while Jimmy Anderson was dismissed by Holder to bring the innings to a close. The damage was done.
In conditions which suited England's four-pronged pace attack, West Indies lost wickets at regular intervals.
Broad had Kraigg Brathwaite caught by Joe Root in the slips, John Campbell was squared up by a rearing Jofra Archer bouncer which leaped off his bat-handle to Rory Burns in the gully, Shai Hope nicked a snorting delivery from Anderson through to Buttler, Shamarh Brooks followed in similar fashion albeit via the inside edge, and Roston Chase was lbw to Broad.
Jermaine Blackwood did provide some resistance in the middle order but his stay was ended by Woakes, who found the gap between bat and pad to knock over middle stump.
