England were forced to delay the announcement of their Test squad for the upcoming tour of New Zealand after captain Joe Root was unable to attend a selection meeting due to illness.

The travelling party was due to be named on Tuesday night GMT but Root, who was afflicted by severe dehydration during the fifth Ashes Test in Sydney, was not fit to be involved in the process.

Therefore, the announcement was rescheduled and is now due to take place at 10pm GMT on Wednesday.

When it is forthcoming, it is expected to include the news that James Vince and Mark Stoneman have kept their places despite miserly Ashes series with the bat.

“It gets down to when is the time to move on and personally I think people like Stoneman and Vince probably get another couple of games to show us what they’ve got,” coach Trevor Bayliss said.

“I think at times during this series against what is probably close to the best bowling attack in the world in their home conditions, they have shown they can play a bit.

“I don’t know whether it was the pressure and the longevity of the five Test matches pretty close to each other or whether there was a fatigue and they dropped off in the last couple of games. But I think they have done enough without anyone really pushing them from behind and they probably deserve another opportunity.”
