The England team and the travelling fan group The Barmy Army shared a minute's silence before play on the fourth day of the third Test for a fan who died in Sri Lanka

Peter Marples, 61, fell ill during the second Test at Kandy and was admitted to a private hospital, before being transferred to Kandy General Hospital, where he died on Sunday 25 November.

Mr. Marples had flown out see the first and second Test with David Johnstone, a close friend from his local pub in Dorking, Surrey.

His brother Chris Marples flew out to Sri Lanka and was present at his side when he died peacefully at 5pm on Sunday.

In tribute to Mr. Marples, the Barmy Army and England team held a minute's silence, followed by a minute's applause on the grass bank of the SSC before the morning session of the fourth day.

The crowd then sung the hymn 'Jerusalem' after the first ball of the day in honour of Mr. Marples.
