Drained England attack looks dead on its feet

Thrilling finale in prospect and the Covid tightrope... ENGLAND V INDIA TALKING POINTS

England will attempt to draw on their recent exploits when they embark on a record-breaking chase to beat India in the fourth Test at The Kia Oval.

Joe Root's side can go 2-1 up in the series with one to play if they successfully pursue 368 on day five. They will resume on 77 for 0 with Rory Burns and Haseeb Hameed unbeaten.

The total would be the highest England have made to win a Test, while India require 10 wickets to themselves take a grip of the series.

If successful, it would eclipse their current record of 359 made to beat Australia in the 2019 Ashes at Headingley when Ben Stokes's unbeaten 135 delivered a remarkable one-wicket success.

Last summer, they produced another unlikely win in the fourth innings after chasing down 277 to beat Pakistan by three wickets at Old Trafford.

Chris Woakes, who has returned with seven wickets and a half-century after a year out of Test cricket, was part of both sides who won those memorable matches in Leeds and Manchester.

"This team has done some special things over the years as an England team in different formats and you want to be a part of it," he said.

"On a day five chase and to try and do something special as a team is a great place to be. We've got the belief that we can go and get the win. A lot of hard work needs to be done.

"You can draw on those experiences I think on what we've done in the past and what we're capable of as a team. A lot of the time it is about believing, believing as a team that you've got the ability to do that and executing so hopefully we can do that.

He added: "Joe will speak as captain, Spoons (Chris Silverwood) will speak as coach. But everyone will be in agreement that we can go on and get the runs. There will be no doubts about that.

"The backroom staff and the coach and the captain will no doubt be mentioning those past experiences to remind people of what we are capable of as a team."
