Tom Hartley handed maiden England call-up for Ireland ODIs

GEORGE DOBELL AT LORD'S: Somerset's Craig Overton has dropped out of the group due to a back issue. It might not be the end of the changes to the squad, with England considering adding Jason Roy

Tom Hartley has been called into the England men's squad for the Metro Bank one-day international series against Ireland.

Hartley, the left-arm spinning Lancashire all-rounder, replaces the Somerset seamer Craig Overton, who has been experiencing pain in his lower back.

While Hartley has claimed just one List A wicket in his career - he has only played three games - he is an experienced T20 performer who has a decent record with both Manchester Originals and Lancashire.

In doing so, he effectively displaced Matt Parkinson, who is bound for Kent at the end of the season, in all formats of the game.

England captain Jos Buttler has hinted there may be further additions to the squad for the three-match series on September 20, 23 and 26 at Headingley, Trent Bridge and Bristol.

Ahead of the fourth ODI against New Zealand, he suggested the team management would consider adding Jason Roy to the squad

Roy, a key member of the 2019 World Cup-winning side, has missed the entire series due to back spasms.

England are likely to confirm their World Cup squad next week. Roy may need to prove his fitness to retain his place.
