Durham have announced the signing of Australia batsman Peter Handscomb for the remainder of the current season.

The 28-year-old will play all formats for the county, and joins fellow Australian D'Arcy Short in featuring for James Franklin's side.

Handscomb, who has replaced countryman Cameron Bancroft as a Durham overseas player after the latter was called up to Australia's Ashes squad, has been cleared for immediate selection and therefore could feature in their T20 Blast fixture away to Worcestshire Rapids at New Road on Sunday.

Durham Cricket's Director of Cricket Marcus North said: "We are delighted to welcome Peter to Durham for the rest of the season.

"Peter is a well-known player across all formats of the game, so it is a great to be welcoming him to Chester le Street.

"He will add something extra to the dressing room as we look to push on for the rest of the season.

"He has proven he can score runs having excelled for Victoria in their domestic competition, so we are pleased to have him joining us at Durham."

The right-hand batsman is no stranger to the English domestic T20 scene, having already played for Yorkshire Vikings in the T20 Blast, Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash and for Rising Pune Supergiants in the Indian Premier League.

Handscomb has also played in the County Championship for Yorkshire and Gloucestershire, and he will now also feature for Durham as they look for promotion into Division 1 and will make his Championship debut against Leicestershire next month.
