India batsman Shreyas Iyer has undergone surgery following the shoulder injury he suffered during the ODI series against England that ruled him out of the Indian Premier League.

Iyer landed awkwardly after diving in an attempt to prevent a boundary during India’s win in the series opener.

He tweeted on Friday to reassure his fans that he would return “in no time” and that the procedure had been “a success”.

Rishabh Pant has replaced him as Delhi Capitals captain for the ongoing IPL, with Ricky Ponting’s side due to get their campaign underway on Saturday against Chennai Super Kings.

Iyer’s injury came just days after he signed a deal with Lancashire to represent the county in the Royal London Cup.

There has been no update yet on whether he will be able to fulfil that contract. The club’s director of cricket, Paul Allott, told BBC Radio Lancashire on March 31 that a call would be made after the operation.

On taking over the reins from his India teammate, Pant said: “Delhi is where I grew up, and where my IPL journey began six years ago. To lead this team one day is a dream I've always harboured.

“And today, as that dream comes true, I feel humbled. I am truly grateful, especially to our team owners, who considered me capable enough for this role. With an amazing coaching staff, and a plethora of accomplished seniors around me, I can't wait to give my absolute best for Delhi Capitals.”
