Worcestershire recruit India international to bolster County Championship seam attack

Navdeep Saini will join Worcestershire for four County Championship fixtures.

The Indian seamer, who spent a brief period with Kent last summer, is set to make his New Road debut against Derbyshire from Sunday (June 25).

Saini claimed 11 wickets in two matches for Kent in 2022, and bolsters an attack which has been impacted by injuries to Dillon Pennington and Adam Finch, an England callup for Josh Tongue, and the retirement of Charlie Morris.

He will be available for the July games against Yorkshire, Leicestershire and Gloucestershire.

Paul Pridgeon, chair of Worcestershire's cricket steering group, said: "He has an impressive track record, having played for India in all formats, and he performed well for Kent last summer, gaining valuable experience of English cricket.

"We felt it was crucial to strengthen our bowling department. With Charlie's departure, Josh’s involvement with England, and a few injury setbacks, we are entering a crucial phase of the Championship season, where we are in contention at the upper end of the table. Therefore, it was important to have the right numbers and quality."

Worcestershire sit fourth in Division Two going into the weekend's red-ball resumption.

The Pears have won two and lost two of their seven matches so far in the competition this season.

Saini noted the contributions of his countrymen Kapil Dev, Ravichandran Ashwin and Zaheer Khan at the county. He was quoted as saying in a club press release: "I also aim to make a significant impact and hit the ground running on Sunday."
