Worcestershire are to change their management structure, with the county advertising for a director of cricket.

The move comes with Paul Pridgeon, a stalwart of the club and the chair of Worcestershire's cricket steering group, looking to step down at the end of the season.

The New Road county have never had a standalone director of cricket, with Steve Rhodes carrying the title but also acting as head coach before his departure in 2017. Since then, the role has been partly performed by Pridgeon, who succeeded Tim Curtis – another Worcestershire legend – in the post.

Pridgeon, who first joined Worcestershire in 1972, will remain on the club's board as vice-chair.

Only three years ago, Worcestershire came within a ball of becoming the first county to retain the T20 Blast title, having won in 2018 by beating Sussex at Edgbaston, but the strategy shift comes amid a difficult summer that has seen an abject T20 Blast campaign and a middling season so far in the LV= Insurance County Championship.

Worcestershire have invited applications for the role, describing its primary purpose as "being to develop and implement a strategy to achieve sustainable success in all formats of the game".

A statement added: "The successful candidate will be responsible for all coaching staff, cricket operations, science and medicine and the academy."

Fanos Hira, the county's chairman since 2018, said: "Worcestershire is a club with a proud history and a very bright future.

"This is an outstanding opportunity for someone with experience and the right qualities to help drive our club forwards.

"We are looking to develop further a vibrant, thriving, successful club that achieves success on and off the pitch. We will explore every avenue in searching for the perfect fit for the role, and we invite applications from all backgrounds."

The job description doesn't suggest what the change would mean for Alex Gidman, Worcestershire's head coach, who replaced Kevin Sharp in the same winter that Hira began in his post.
