Worcestershire confirm Alan Richardson as new head coach

Kadeer Ali, promoted from second XI coach, will act as assistant head coach. Alex Gidman stood down after four years at the helm in October

Worcestershire have installed Alan Richardson as their new head coach.

The 47-year-old succeeds Alex Gidman, who stood down after four years in the role last month.

Richardson, who returned to the club in 2018 after four seasons with them as a player during which he took 254 first-class wickets, has served as an assistant coach and also led Worcestershire in the Royal London Cup. He has also worked with England men, most recently during the T20I series in the West Indies

"I've been involved in the club for a long time now and know its rich history," said Richardson. "It's a proud moment for me to take on this role at Worcestershire.

Kadeer Ali will act as assistant head coach after being promoted from leading the second XI.

He played for Worcestershire at the start of the century, before moving to Gloucestershire and Leicestershire, and came back to the club in a coaching capacity in 2019.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for me and I’m really excited for the future of the club too," he explained.

"We've got a young, hungry squad, and everyone has their best days in front of them. I'm excited about working with the players on a full-time basis."

The recruitment process for additional coaching support will take place over the coming months. The recruitment of a director of cricket is also ongoing.

On the double appointment, Cricket Steering Group Chair Paul Pridgeon said: "They both have a deep understanding of the club and are amongst the most respected and progressive coaches around, having excelled in their coaching roles here and in previous roles.

"They deserve their chance to excel and build on our impressive foundations, and they will be further assisted by other important hires over the coming months.

"We wish them well."
