Derbyshire have secured the future of Wayne Madsen until the end of the 2023 season.

The 38-year-old, whose deal was due to expire at the end of the year, has signed on for what will be his 15th season at The Incora County Ground.

Madsen is three short of 400 appearances for Derbyshire since debuting in July 2009.

Regarded as one of Derbyshire's greatest ever batters, he has hit 18,265 runs across the formats

The Durban-native is their record scorer in T20 cricket with 3,010 and has started the 2022 campaign in impressive fashion, hitting two centuries and four fifties in nine LV= Insurance County Championship Division Two innings

"When you talk about modern greats in county cricket, Wayne Madsen is one of the main names that comes to mind," said head coach Mickey Arthur.

"The fact that he’s still performing at such a high level is a testament to his professionalism and dedication.

"This is a player who has shown international quality throughout his Derbyshire career and he’s also a fantastic leader in our dressing room. Young players can learn a lot just by working with somebody like Wayne daily."

As well as a host of individual achievements, Madsen captained Derbyshire to their most recent piece of silverware - the Division Two title in 2012

"I’ve dedicated the bulk of my career to Derbyshire and I’ve loved every minute of it so far," said the former South African hockey player. "This is my home.

"I want to keep playing for as long as possible, and with the progress being made under Mickey already, it’s a really exciting time to be a part of Derbyshire cricket."
