Warwickshire make scourge of Australia second overseas signing

Hassan Ali has been the club's only overseas player during the opening weeks of the new county season but a familiar figure will now join him until the end of the T20 Blast group stage

Warwickshire have signed seam-bowling allrounder Aamer Jamal as an overseas player.

Aamer, who made an outstanding start to his Test career at the end of last year, will be available to the club until the end of the T20 Blast group stages.

He arrived in Birmingham on Thursday (April 25) and is keen to come straight into the side to play in the County Championship match against Nottinghamshire starting on Friday (April 26).

But having not played a first-class game since the first week of January, however, it is possible he could be asked to wait until Warwickshire's next game on May 10.

Aamer, who bowls at a fast medium pace and is an aggressive batter, will join up with international colleague Hassan Ali, who is signed up until July, at Edgbaston. The pair were recently at a training camp with the rest of the Pakistan squad.

Making his Test debut against Australia in Perth in mid-December, Aamer claimed 6 for 111 in his first innings. He fared even better in Sydney, where he scored 82 from No.9 in Pakistan's first innings and then claimed 6 for 69 in Australia's first innings. He was subsequently named the player of the match.

He made his international debut in a T20I against England in September 2022 when he delivered a nerveless final over to Moeen Ali to help Pakistan win. He is not thought likely to be called up for Pakistan in the T20 World Cup, or any of the matches which precede it, though that could change if they suffer a raft of injuries.

He also has T20 experience with Comilla Victorians in the Bangladesh Premier League and Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League.

"He really captured the cricket world’s attention in Australia," Gavin Larsen, Warwickshire performance director, said. "He took the Aussies on with good pace, bounce, and a combative approach, all attributes you want in a fast bowler.

"Pat Cummins was named Player of the Series but you could have made a very strong argument for Jamal to have been awarded that title.

"When we found out Aamir was available we did our due diligence and made an offer. He’s jumping out of his skin to be on the park on Friday. He was on the same Pakistan training camp with Hassan so we know he’s fit and strong."
