Fixture: Hampshire Hawks v Surrey
Venue: Ageas Bowl, Southampton
Date: Wednesday, June 30, 2021
Start time: 7pm
What’s the lowdown?
These two sides have won one of their last 13 matches combined in the competition. And while Surrey impressive start to the Blast means they remain in contention for the quarter-finals, Hampshire have won one of their first eight matches and are all but out of the race.
Though they have had the rough side of the weather, Hants have endured an inspired first half of the campaign.
Three of their last four games have been lost to rain without a ball being bowling, including the first clash with Surrey on June 18.
Since being dispatched by Sussex at Hove, James Vince's side have made subtle improvements. They put on 215-6 against Middlesex before losing by three wickets with two balls remaining.
And they nearly got home in their last completed game at Sussex, despite Colin de Grandhomme's 66 and four wickets for Scott Currie.
Last season's finalists lost their early season momentum after a no result and an abandonment ended a run of three wins on the trot. Heavy defeats to Essex and Somerset followed before a return to form against Middlesex at The Kia Oval.
After escaping from an imminent defeat to Sussex thanks to the rain, they were beaten in a thriller against Glamorgan. Needing two off the final ball in pursuit of 154 Timm van der Gugten ran out Kyle Jamieson to secure victory.
Who’s in form?
Just three Hampshire players have reached three figures for runs - Joe Weatherley, James Vince and D'Arcy Short - but Colin de Grandhomme's 66 on debut against Somerset provides a tinge of encouragement as the second half of the group stage beckons.
Naturally, their bowling department have had little support but leg-spinner Mason Crane's 10 wickets is an admirable return in the circumstances. But no player to have bowled more than four overs has an economy rate below eight.
Ollie Pope's return to the fold might end up being reflected on as a key moment in Surrey's campaign. Already with two half-centuries in three innings including a match-winning 52* against Middlesex.
Dan Moriarty is starting to exert the control which ran through last year's run to Finals Day. His seven scalps have come at an economy rate of 6.60
