Durham have re-signed Scott Borthwick from Surrey on a long-term contract.

The allrounder came through the ranks in the north east to be part of the county's most successful squad before leaving for The Oval in 2017.

Surrey have agreed to release Borthwick from the remaining year of his contract in London to allow him to move back to his boyhood club.

He said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Surrey and I’d like to say a big thank you to all of the players, staff and members who supported me during my time there.

“I cannot express how excited I am to return to Durham. It’s a club where I enjoyed a lot of success and will always be my home. I can’t wait to get on the field at Emirates Riverside and help take Durham back to the top of the game.”

The former England international will finish the current season with Surrey, who are in T20 Blast quarter-final action on Thursday, before teaming up with Durham in pre-season ahead of 2021.

Durham director of cricket Marcus North said: “This is a big signing for the us and shows our intent to take this club forward. Scott brings with him a wealth of experience across all three formats and provides us with options at the top of the batting order and as a spinner, which are both areas we need to strengthen.

“Having previously played for the club he knows what it means to be a Durham player and will fit straight into the dressing room. It is great to see another one of our homegrown players return as we continue to build towards a big summer for the club in 2021.”
