Middlesex have re-signed Ryan Higgins five seasons after the allrounder left for Gloucestershire, where he has become one of the leading players on the county circuit.

The 27-year-old, who has signed a four-year deal, came through Middlesex's academy but moved on at the end of the 2017 campaign, frustrated by a lack of first-team opportunities.

Since then, he has flourished, making almost 4,000 runs and taking more than 260 wickets for Gloucestershire, whose promotion to Division One of the County Championship he spearheaded in 2019.

"It made so much sense to come back home, and when the opportunity came about I knew I had to take it," he said. "I am so excited for the cricket to be played over the next few years and the people I will be playing it with.

"I am excited to contribute to challenge for trophies and can’t wait to be playing again with mates who are still at Middlesex. I'm absolutely buzzing to be back."

He added: "It's been an amazing journey for me at Gloucestershire and I have loved my time here. It's been incredible to be a part of a great team for the last few years; we have had success in the T20 Vitality Blast, with promotion to Division One of the County Championship in 2019 being a highlight.

"I am going to miss all my mates here, not only are they very talented and exciting cricketers, they are also great people and could not have been more welcoming when I first moved and throughout my time since."

"Ryan has been a fantastic player for Gloucestershire during his time here, we wish him all the best for the future," added Steve Snell, performance director at Gloucestershire.

"Ryan has the right to pursue opportunities elsewhere and this creates a good opportunity for us to re-build the squad in a slightly different way with the introduction of some new faces in the coming weeks and months."

It is the second major departure of the week for Gloucestershire, who have also seen Benny Howell return to Hampshire. While Howell has played his final game for the county, Higgins still has the final run of County Championship matches in which to compete once The Hundred, where he is representing Welsh Fire, comes to an end.
