Leicestershire have appointed Lewis Hill as their LV= Insurance County Championship captain for the 2023 season.

The 32-year-old takes over from Callum Parkinson. The spinner's contract is set to expire at the end of 2023 and "doesn't consider himself in a position to commit to a contract extension".

Hill has spent his entire county career with Leicestershire, scoring 2,906 runs and completing 100 catches and three stumpings in 62 first-class appearances.

He enjoyed his most productive red-ball season in 2021, scoring 944 runs at 44.95, including three centuries and five half-centuries. He followed it up with 503 runs (one century, four half-century) in 2022.

The wicketkeeper-batter has also made 46 List A appearances, scoring 1,139 runs at 28.47, and a further 79 T20 appearances, scoring 971 runs.

Hill, who made his debut for Leicestershire in 2015, also captains the club in List A cricket.

"It's a really proud moment for me to be selected as captain of Leicestershire. I've loved my two seasons skippering the 50-over side, so I'm really excited for the challenge ahead," Hill said.

"I want to continue the good work Callum led last year. He's still going to be an important player in our team, and I know I can draw on his experience whenever required.

"There are promising signs within the squad and we're all fully focused on delivering success in the County Championship next season."

Director of cricket, Claude Henderson, added: "Firstly, we want to congratulate Lewis on his new role. We have full belief in his abilities to lead Leicestershire to success moving forwards.

"We also want to thank Callum for his duties during 2022, as well as for standing firmly behind both Lewis and the club. Although we are disappointed Callum can't commit at this stage, the club will continue to have conversations with him to try and ensure his future lies with LCCC."
