Derbyshire have signed Australian allrounder Hilton Cartwright on a short-term deal as cover for Shan Masood.

Cartwright will be available for the remainder of the Falcons' Vitality Blast campaign and three LV= Insurance County Championship matches in July.

Derbyshire have acted quickly to fill the void created by Masood's call-up to the Pakistan Test squad for the two-game series in Sri Lanka.

Head coach Mickey Arthur said: "He's a very talented cricketer and his Sheffield Shield record is one of the best for an all-rounder in Australian cricket right now.

"He'll come straight into the mix this week and I'm looking forward to working with him during what is a key part of the season for us."

Derbyshire are enjoying a fine season - their first under the tutelage of Arthur - and are heavily involved in both the Division Two promotion mix in the Championship, and the fight for a place in the knockout stages of the Blast.

A huge part of their success has been the form of Masood, who has accumulated 1,037 first-class runs and 516 against the white ball. His boots are therefore substantial for Cartwright to fill, but the Aussie is keen to make an impact during his short time at the Incora County Ground.

"This is a great opportunity for me to test myself in the English domestic game again and work with one of the best coaches in the world.

"The club's had a great start to the season and as it's getting to a crucial stage of the summer, I'm hoping to contribute with bat and ball to keep the momentum going that the lads have created."

Cartwright is not a like-for-like replacement for Masood. A middle-order batsman and useful reserve seam option, his last first-class game came in the Sheffield Shield in April for his state, Western Australia.

The 30-year-old has two Test caps, and has also appeared in a pair of one-day internationals.
