Gloucestershire batter Ben Charlesworth faces a lengthy period on the sidelines after suffering a stress fracture to his foot during the LV= Insurance County Championship clash against Yorkshire.

The 21-year-old, whose absence begins from the visit of Surrey starting on Thursday (April 28), will be out for several weeks and will require a "period of sustained recovery," according to his county.

The former England Under-19 international is not expected to return until the middle of the summer.

He featured in both of the first two four-day games, an away draw with Northamptonshire and a six-wicket defeat to Yorkshire, scoring 21 runs over four innings and taking two wickets.

Performance director Steve Snell said: "It’s obviously a big blow for Ben at this time of the season and for the squad, but the coaching staff and medical team will support him in every way we can to help get Ben back to full fitness as quickly as possible.

"We’re hopeful having Ben back with the first team during the second half of the season."

Charlesworth joins overseas fast-bowler Naseem Shah, who suffered a shoulder injury that will keep him out until the start of Gloucestershire’s T20 Blast campaign, on the injury list. Mohammad Amir has been signed to replace his countryman for the next three County Championship matches.
