Aamir Jamal leaves Warwickshire early due to back injury

The Pakistan seamer has only played three times since arriving at Edgbaston in April; both parties have cut short the deal a week before it was due to finish

Aamir Jamal's overseas stint at Warwickshire has come to an end due to a back injury.

The Pakistan quick, who has played three Tests and six T20Is, joined the county in April, but a diagnosis of an issue that restricted Jamal to just three appearances over three months has led to the mutual termination of his contract.

He featured in just two County Championship matches and a single T20 Blast fixture, claiming two wickets in all. He has not played since June 8.

"This is my first experience with a significant injury, and it's been challenging to accept," said Jamal. "I'm now focused on getting back to full fitness and resuming play.

"I would have liked my time with the Bears to have gone differently, but I appreciate the support from everyone at the club and wish them success for the rest of the season."

Gavin Larsen, Warwickshire's performance director, praised Jamal's attitude during his rehabilitation process and insisted that he was "confident he will return fit and ready to represent Pakistan soon".

Jamal's deal was set to expire on July 19, with the conclusion of the Blast group stage, but it was agreed to cut it short a fortnight earlier, when "his rehab plan indicated he would not be fit for selection before then".

"Aamir has worked incredibly hard with our medical and strength and conditioning team," said Larsen, "but unfortunately, we've run out of time to get him back on the field and bowling at full pace."

Warwickshire's pace resources have been decimated this summer, with injuries to Chris Rushworth, Craig Miles and Liam Norwell leaving the county short on options. Hassan Ali's spell has also been affected by international duties for Pakistan. On Monday, they announced the signing for next season of Ethan Bamber, the Middlesex seamer.
