Taunton (day two of four): Somerset 381-7, Hampshire

Centuries from Tom Abell and Kasey Aldridge saw Somerset recover from a perilous position on the second day of the County Championship Division One match against Hampshire at Taunton.

After the first day washout, the hosts slumped to 99 for 5, having won the toss, before Abell and Aldridge put together a sixth-wicket stand of 221, Abell making 118 and Aldridge 149 not out. Keith Barker was the pick of the Hampshire bowling attack with 2 for 35 from 13 overs.

For Abell, it was a second Championship hundred in successive games, while 24-year-old Aldridge's score was a career-best, beating the 101 not out he made against Lancashire at Old Trafford in 2023. Together, they enabled their team to close on 381 for 7.

Edgbaston (day two of four)Essex 325-5, Warwickshire

Essex batted solidly on the second day of their County Championship match against Warwickshire at Edgbaston to advance towards the draw that would secure their Division One status.

Essex closed on 325 for 5 with Charlie Allison's 98 heading an impressive collective effort. No batter scored fewer than 25 while Michael Pepper made 54 not out, Dean Elgar 48 and Matt Critchley 47.

After a washout on the first day and, judging by the weather forecast, very little play likely on the third tomorrow, this match appears nailed on for a draw, which would send both teams into next week's final games safely clear of the bottom two.

Chester-Le-Street (day two of four)Worcestershire 320-5, Durham

Half-centuries from Rehaan Edavalath, Brett D'Oliveira and Gareth Roderick helped Division Two-bound Worcestershire frustrate relegation candidates Durham on day two of their County Championship clash.

Durham struck twice in the morning session to leave the visitors 49 for 2, but 21-year-old Edavalath and 19-year-old Dan Lategan combined for a partnership worth 84 to steer their side out of a spot of trouble.

Durham bounced back with a double-wicket burst, removing the pair in the afternoon, but Roderick and D'Oliveira frustrated Durham, picking up their own half-centuries in a partnership worth 170, the highest fifth-wicket partnership for their side in the fixture, to take the Pears to 320 for 5 at close.

Hove (day two of four)Yorkshire 194, Sussex 84-4 Sussex trail by 110 runs with six wickets remaining

Fourteen wickets fell at Hove as two sides needing a victory that would make sure of their Division One status produced a compelling day.

Sussex were in the ascendancy when they bowled Yorkshire out for 194 after tea, but the visitors fought back, reducing the hosts 84 for 4 when bad light ended with 13 overs not bowled.

A draw would probably suit both teams in their battle to avoid an immediate return to the second division, but despite no play on the first day, there is now every chance of a positive result.

A pitch that had been under cover for the best part of 48 hours offered help to the seamers throughout, but there was also some flawed shot selection from both teams.
