Utilta Bowl (day one of four): Nottinghamshire 241-5, Hampshire

Nottinghamshire batters Jack Haynes and Freddie McCann continued to score runs against Hampshire in the 2025 County Championship on an even first day at Utilita Bowl.

Haynes and McCann both collected centuries in the reverse fixture at Trent Bridge in May, before each picking up half-centuries on the south coast.

Haynes ended the day unbeaten on 70, after McCann was dismissed for 79 – one of two scalps for Kyle Abbott, with Eddie Jack also picking up a couple of wickets.

Nottinghamshire ended the day on 241 for 5, with neither side able to complain too much about their position in the match.

Taunton (day one of four): Durham 145 & 5-2 Somerset 250 - Durham are 100 runs behind with eight second-innings wickets remaining

Somerset's Craig Overton claimed 6 for 23 as 22 wickets fell on the opening day of the County Championship Division One game against Durham at Taunton.

Invited to bat first on a green pitch, the visitors subsided to 145 all out, with Overton twice on a hat-trick during ten probing overs from the Marcus Trescothick Pavilion End. Ben Raine top-scored with 42.

In reply, Somerset posted 250 all out, Tom Lammonby putting the pitch in perspective with an impressive 89 off 109 balls, including eight fours. Off-spinner George Drissell returned career-best figures of 5 for 59.

Durham then lost skipper Alex Lees and nightwatchman Callum Parkinson in the three remaining overs to close on five for two and trailed by 100 runs.

Edgbaston (day one of four): Worcestershire 262-8, Warwickshire

Ethan Brookes led the resistance against his old club as Worcestershire toiled after choosing to bat in the Rothesay County Championship derby at Edgbaston.

Worcestershire closed the first day on 262 for 8 with Brookes unbeaten on 80 (128 balls), having taken responsibility after the fall of captain Brett D’Oliveira (57, 148) left his side on an unconvincing 175 for 5.

D’Oliveira had won the toss and chosen to bat on a good pitch but in perfect seam-bowling conditions with moisture in the air, grey cloud overhead and moderate light.

Run-scoring was never easy against an attack led by former Worcestershire all-rounder Ed Barnard and Ethan Bamber, who both ended the day with 2 for 47.

Scarborough (day one of four): Yorkshire 282-4, Surrey

Yorkshire's top order ensured a settled start to their County Championship clash with leaders Surrey at Scarborough.

Hovering just three points above the drop zone in Division One after nine matches, Yorkshire ended an engaging opening day on a healthy 282 for 4 from 86 overs.

Finley Bean, Will Luxton and James Wharton all posted half-centuries against a Surrey attack who struggled to create consistent pressure having lost the toss.

Bean (57) shared an opening stand of 107 with Adam Lyth either side of lunch before Luxton and Wharton usurped them by sharing 149 for the third wicket either side of tea. Luxton posted a career best 71 off 118 balls and Wharton went on to top score with a season's best 78 off 166.
