Notts aim to sign overseas batsman before the end of February

Nottinghamshire have done their business for the T20 Blast, with Dan Christian and Ish Sodhi set to arrive at Trent Bridge for the shortest format, but they still need to add a marquee player to their ranks for the red-ball and 50-over competitions

Nottinghamshire are targeting an overseas batsman

Nottinghamshire want a batsman to fill their overseas slot for the County Championship and Royal London One-Day Cup and plan to have a signing sorted by the end of the month.

Notts have already done their business for the T20 Blast, with Dan Christian and Ish Sodhi set to arrive at Trent Bridge for the shortest format, but they still need to add a marquee player to their ranks for the red-ball and 50-over competitions.

Director of cricket Mike Newell has now revealed that a batsman is the order of the day, and that moves are afoot to complete a signing which has been delayed by the Indian Premier League auction process.

"We have decided to go for a batsman because we want to strengthen that area of the team. We have put in a couple of offers," Newell said.

"It’s always difficult to make a move before the IPL auction because you just don’t know until after that has taken place who is going to be available.

"Ideally, we would like to have the player in place before the club’s annual general meeting on Monday, February 26, and that’s what we’re working to."

Australian seamer James Pattinson and Indian batsman Cheteshwar Pujara filled the role last season.

Notts will want to ensure whoever does eventually arrive does so in time for their mid-April Championship opener against Lancashire at Old Trafford.
