Nottinghamshire and Surrey joust, James Rew move goes pear-shaped and Hampshire struggle again

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE ROUNDUP: It was another good day for some of the Championship's leading run-scorers, with Joe Clarke, Tom Abell and Jake Lehmann all continuing their impressive form

Chelmsford (day one of four): Hampshire 235, Essex 51-2 - Essex are 184 runs behind with eight first-innings wickets remaining

The half-centuries racked up diligently by Jake Lehmann and Ben Brown stood out like beacons amid a sea of single digits on the scorecard as Hampshire's season continued to implode.

Lehmann, despite only just returning from a dash home to Australia for unspecified personal reasons, recorded his fifth successive County Championship fifty to reach 425 runs from seven innings this summer. His 105-run fifth-wicket stand with captain Brown was the only one of real substance as bottom-of-the-table Hampshire subsided to 235 all out.

Lehmann managed to hang around for 164 balls in compiling 89, while Brown's 73 came from 116 balls. Otherwise, 18-year-old Ben Mayes' 20 was the only other contribution in double figures as Hampshire batsmen found nefarious ways of getting out.

Prospective England candidate Sam Cook took a trio of top-order wickets to finish with 3 for 56 before Wiaan Mulder wrapped up the tail with post-tea figures of 3 for 12 as the final five wickets fell in just 37 balls.

In 22 overs in the evening, Essex reduced the deficit by 51 for the loss of Paul Walter, caught behind, dangling his bat out to Kyle Abbott, and Dean Elgar, tucked up by a short-pitched delivery from James Fuller and dollying up a catch.

Cardiff (day one of four): Somerset 337-9, Glamorgan

Late wickets kept Glamorgan and Somerset in the balance after Tom Abell's resistance led the visitors to 337 for 9 on the opening day of the County Championship fixture at Sophia Gardens.

The former Somerset captain continued his strong start to the season, dismissed on 86 as one of three wickets to fall inside the final four overs. The recovery came following an afternoon wobble courtesy of 18-year-old debutant Tom Norton, who took 3 for 75. Josh Thomas earlier continued his form with 71 after his new opening partner, James Rew (4), was bowled loosely driving.

The 22-year-old wicketkeeper, who has spent the majority of the first few matches batting at No.4, opened for the first time in his 62-game first-class career with recent speculation around the vacancy for England in the first Test match of the summer starting on June 4.

Trent Bridge (day one of four): Nottinghamshire 317-7, Surrey

In-form Joe Clarke cemented his position as the County Championship's leading runscorer by making his second hundred of the season, but Surrey seamer Dan Worrall countered with five wickets on an intriguing first day of an eagerly anticipated clash with champions Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.

Clarke's unbeaten 129 took his tally for the season so far to 675 as Nottinghamshire closed on 317 for 7 after Jack Haynes had made 82.

Their fourth-wicket stand of 146 had the home side in the driving seat at 251 for three, but Surrey, seeking to avenge the defeat at the Kia Oval last September that effectively handed the 2025 title to Nottinghamshire, fought back well, with Worrall - making his first appearance of the season after injury - leading the way with five for 61.
