South Africa's Steyn will join Hampshire prior to the Proteas' tour of Sri Lanka in July.
Steyn will train at the Ageas bowl in June, with Hampshire aiming to have the 34-year-old return as their overseas player for the final weeks of the season once the Sri Lanka tour ends.
The Proteas paceman is also set to fill in for his national team-mate Hashim Amla for a one-day match against Somerset, and Championship match against Surrey in June.
In an illustrious career, Steyn has taken 578 first-class wickets at an average of 23.29.
However he has been plagued with injuries in recent years, playing only one Test since November 2016.
