Essex condemn struggling Hampshire to another defeat, thrilling final day in store at Sophia Gardens

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE ROUNDUP: Matt Critchely made an unbeaten 90 from 73 balls to guide his side home on the run chase on the way to a six-wicket win at Chelmsford

Chelmsford (day three of four): Hampshire 235 & 214, Essex 273 & 178-4 - Essex won by six wickets

Matt Critchley made short work of steering Essex to their second County Championship win of the season by six wickets against a struggling Hampshire at Chelmsford.

The 29-year-old allrounder smashed 15 boundaries in his unbeaten 90 from 73 balls as he led the Essex recovery from a creaking 40 for 3 in a 101-run fourth-wicket stand with Charlie Allison, who was a comparative bystander.

Fittingly, Critchley, who had already recorded 173 against the same opposition in the opening game, was still there when Wiaan Mulder lofted Tom Prest over midwicket for six to complete the victory with one ball of the scheduled third day's play to go.

That Hampshire were able to set Essex 177 to win from a notional 138 overs was down to contrasting, but equally important innings by Nick Gubbins and Ben Brown. Gubbins frustrated Essex for three-and-a-half hours for his 71, but even when he was fifth man out, Hampshire's lead was only 87.

However, a typically punchy, unbeaten 57 from 89 balls from captain Brown ensured his cohorts had something tangible to bowl at.

Cardiff (day three of four): Somerset 354 & 157, Glamorgan 229 & 140-5 Glamorgan require 143 runs to win with five wickets remaining

Tom Abell's second half-century in the game, together with late wickets, has set up an intriguing final day prospect against Glamorgan.

Resuming on 32 for 6 due to debutant Tom Norton's hat-trick in a chaotic final hour on day two, Abell scored 71, his eighth score above 40 in nine innings this season.

He was well supported by 45 from captain Lewis Gregory to get Somerset to 157 before the four-pronged seam attack added pressure to a stubborn Glamorgan chase.

Asa Tribe notched up his third half-century this season as Glamorgan's opening pair added 81 before the entirely international capped bowling attack found success, particularly Migael Pretorius, who claimed three to leave the hosts 140 for 5 overnight, needing a further 143 to win.

Hove (day three of four): Leicestershire 328 & 154-4, Sussex 430 - Leicestershire lead by 52 runs with six wickets remaining

Half centuries by Leicestershire's Rishi Patel and Jonny Tattersall frustrated Sussex, who had taken a first innings lead of 102 and at one stage fancied their chances of winning the match in three days.

Twenty-five overs were lost to a combination of rain and bad light on a cold and blustery third day at the County Ground, Hove.

But Leicestershire, who at one stage were 37 for three, still 65 runs behind, were pulled round by Patel (56) and Tattersall (54 not out).

Sussex started the day on 386 for 8, 58 runs ahead, and John Simpson, 89 not out overnight, was the main aggressor as they extended their lead.

Ollie Robinson had added only four when he sliced a drive to backward point, but Simpson, supported by Henry Crocombe, went on to his second century of the season.
