Southampton (day one of four): Hampshire 336-4, Durham

New boy Ali Orr began to fulfil the expectations placed on him with a smart maiden Hampshire century as he led a positive batting day for his side against Durham in the Vitality County Championship.

Opening batter Orr, who controversially moved from boyhood club Sussex in the winter, expertly amassed 126 for his first score for Hampshire. It was his first Championship hundred since September 2022 and his fifth all told.

Spinner Callum Parkinson was the pick of the Durham attack – taking 3 for 110 – but Tom Prest's whirlwind 65 gave the day to the hosts, who ended on 336 for 4.

Canterbury (day one of four): Worcestershire 308-5, Kent

A Gareth Roderick century left Worcestershire in a commanding position after day one of their County Championship with Kent at Canterbury.

The visitors were 308 for 5 at stumps, with Roderick hitting 117 from 281 balls, after the former Kent second XI player Kashif Ali had given them a platform with 72. Adam Hose was unbeaten on 50 at stumps, reaching his half-century with a single off Nathan Gilchrist in the final over of the day.

Matt Parkinson took 2 for 79, but it was largely a torpid day in the field for Kent, who struggled to make anything happen on a benign wicket until Joey Evison claimed late two wickets to end the day with figures of 2 for 39.

The day began in sombre fashion, with an emotive minute's applause for Worcestershire's Josh Baker, who died last week at the age of just 20. Both teams wore black armbands and the flags flew at half mast over the Frank Woolley Stand.

Nottingham (day one of four): Lancashire 306-8, Nottinghamshire

Dillon Pennington was Nottinghamshire's outstanding performer as Lancashire were denied the prosperity they had been hoping for when they opted to bat on day one of their County Championship match at Trent Bridge.

Skipper Keaton Jennings made 91 and overseas batter Tom Bruce 73 but Lancashire let a good position slip, tumbling from 190 for 2 to close on 306 for 8.

Pennington (3 for 46) inflicted heavy damage by taking 3 for 15 in an excellent five-over spell with the second new ball before seamer Dane Paterson (2 for 64) dealt Lancashire a further blow by removing Bruce in the day's penultimate over.

With Australian spinner Nathan Lyon rested for this round, Lancashire have named England pace bowler Saqib Mahmood in their line-up for the first time in 12 months following a stress fracture.

The Oval (day one of four): Warwickshire 318-8, Surrey

Ed Barnard led some determined resistance by the Warwickshire lower order after Surrey's relentless seam attack, spearheaded by Jordan Clark, looked to have put the county champions in control at the Kia Oval.

Clark took four wickets to help reduce Warwickshire to 167 for 6 but Barnard, unbeaten on 96 at stumps, shared stands of 55 with Michael Burgess and Aamer Jamal to help wrest back the initiative as his side reached 318 for 8, having been put in.

Much of the first day had unfolded like so many in recent years at The Oval. Surrey bowled first on a green-tinged pitch offering good pace and carry and their seam attack worked their way steadily through the opposition batting.
