Division One

Newport (first day of four): Hampshire 288-6 v Nottinghamshire

Scorecard

Joe Weatherley scored his first Specsavers County Championship half-century for 11 months as Hampshire edged Nottinghamshire on the first day of first-class cricket on the Isle of Wight since 1963.

Weatherley fluently struck 66 as Hampshire reached 288 for six, with Steven Mullaney and Jake Ball both taking two wickets each on a pulsating first day.

Beckenham (first day of four): Surrey 420-9 v Kent

Scorecard

A maiden first-class hundred from Surrey’s Will Jacks and a four-wicket haul by Kent debutant Wiaan Mulder made for three contrasting sessions as these Division 1 neighbours tussled for supremacy on the opening day of their Specsavers County Championship clash in Beckenham.

By stumps Surrey had reached 420 for 9 after Jacks had dominated mid-afternoon proceedings with an eye-catching 120 that left Kent’s attack struggling to find an effective containment plan.

A tall right-hander playing only his 12th first-class match, Jacks found himself in the thick of the action well before lunch as Surrey, having opted to bat first, slid to 65 for five with 17 overs of the start.

The product of St George’s College, Weybridge, Jacks dug in to turn the tide Surrey’s way with a 175-run sixth-wicket stand in tandem with Scott Borthwick.

Taunton (first day of four): Somerset 209, Warwickshire 110-7

Scorecard

Seventeen wickets fell on an action-packed opening day of the Specsavers County Championship match between Somerset and Warwickshire at Taunton.

The game between the top and bottom sides in the First Division looked to be going against the form book when Somerset were bowled out for 209 after an uncontested toss, Oliver Hannon-Darby claiming a career-best 5-18.

But Warwickshire’s batsmen also struggled on a green-tinged pitch, slumping to 79 for 5, with Craig Overton taking three of the wickets, before closing on 110 for 7.

Somerset’s total was boosted by 47 extras and the top score by a batsman on either side was the 36 made by the hosts’ number nine Josh Davey.

Division Two

Derby (second day of four): Derbyshire 378 v Glamorgan 214-4

Scorecard

Billy Root delivered an impressive display of character as Glamorgan fought back on the second day of the Division Two match against Derbyshire at Derby.

Joe Root’s younger brother came out to bat shortly after it was announced he had been banned from bowling because of a suspect action but responded with a half-century as Glamorgan closed on 214 for 4 in reply to Derbyshire’s 378.

Charlie Hemphrey made 75, his highest first-class score for Glamorgan who had earlier been frustrated by Anuj Dal’s maiden 50 which helped Derbyshire secure a fourth batting point.

Chester-le-Street (first day of four): Durham 158, Gloucestershire 120-5

Scorecard

Gloucestershire head into day two of their Specsavers County Championship match against Durham just 38 runs behind the hosts after 15-wickets fell on day one at Chester-Le-Street.

David Payne was the pick of the bowlers taking 4-40 as Durham were dismissed for just 158 in two sessions - Matt Taylor, Ryan Higgins and Josh Shaw taking two wickets apiece. Jack Burnham (43) and Ben Raine (42) making noteworthy impacts with the bat.

In reply, Durham restricted Gloucestershire to 120 for5 at the close of play, Matt Salisbury taking 3-18 with James Bracey the top scorer for the visitors with 35.

Old Trafford (first day of four): Worcestershire 172, Lancashire 88-5

Scorecard

James Anderson recorded his 46th first-class haul of five wickets or more, but Wayne Parnell led a superb Worcestershire fight back from 38 for seven to even up a 15-wicket day one of this clash between two promotion hopefuls at Emirates Old Trafford.

Pre-game Division Two leaders in the Specsavers County Championship, Worcester crumbled badly in the face of England Test bowlers present and past Anderson and Graham Onions having been invited to bat.

But former South Africa bowling all-rounder Parnell’s 63 was at the heart of their recovery to 172 inside 59 overs before returning 3-19 from 10.4 overs with the ball as Lancashire closed on 88 for five from 36.4.

Anderson claimed four of the seven wickets before lunch - the other three went to Onions - and finished with 5-25 from 17 overs upon his return from a week out with a knee injury.

Eighteen of Anderson’s hauls of five wickets or more have come for Lancashire.

Northampton (first day of four): Sussex 370-6 v Northamptonshire

Scorecard

Ben Brown and Chris Jordan produced a remarkable recovery for Sussex on the opening day against Northamptonshire at Wantage Road with a pair of fluent centuries to transform a dire position at 68 for 6 to close, incredibly, on 370 for 6.

Jordan joined Brown as wickets tumbled in the morning session with scrambling together a score of any note the primary task. But 302 unbeaten runs later and Sussex had transformed the match with Jordan 158 and Brown 153 by the close.

They shared the second-highest seventh-wicket stand in Sussex history and the highest for the wicket ever conceded by Northants.
