Carberry appointed Leicestershire captain after making move from Hampshire

Leicestershire have appointed Michael Carberry as captain in all formats for the 2018 campaign.

Former England international Carberry only arrived at Grace Road on a full-time basis in September, having agreed a two-year contract, but he has been chosen to lead the team in the County Championship, Royal London One-Day Cup and Vitality Blast.

A club statement read: "Leicestershire CCC has announced that Michael Carberry has been appointed as the new captain in all competitions for the 2018 season.

"Carberry was part of the Ashes tour in 2013-14 and also has vast experience of county cricket after making his first-class debut in 2001."

Carberry averages 41.18 across his first-class appearances, and has accumulated more than 22,000 career runs between all three formats.

The 37-year-old struggled with the bat during the second half of last season, failing to pass 30 in any of his 13 innings after July 14.

He spent the final few weeks of the campaign at Grace Road prior to penning a two-year contract in the autumn.

There has been a mass changing of the guard at Leicestershire over the winter, with head coach Paul Nixon rejigging his backroom staff.

John Sadler has arrived as assistant coach, Matt Mason was appointed bowling coach and Tom Smith, the former Lancashire batsman, has been named as Second XI coach.

Leicestershire begin their County Championship campaign against Sussex on April 20.
