Perth Scorchers have suffered a further blow to their hopes of defending their Big Bash League title after Tymal Mills withdrew from the new season.

The left-arm seamer, part of the England side that won the men's T20 World Cup, has pulled out due to a "family emergency".

Mills, 30, was part of the Scorchers side that won the 2021/22 title, taking 12 wickets in seven appearances.

He has previously represented Brisbane Heat and Hobart Hurricanes during a T20 career including more than 170 appearances.

The Sussex seamer was recruited during the inaugural overseas player draft alongside Phil Salt and Laurie Evans. But all three players have now been forced out of contention.

Evans was replaced by Faf du Plessis (for the first half of the campaign) after testing positive for a banned substance while Salt suffered a shoulder injury during England's one-day international series against Australia.

Mitch Marsh is also unavailable after having keyhole surgery on a long-term left ankle injury that keeps him out for three months.

Stephen Eskinazi and Adam Lyth have both been added to the squad. Scorchers, four-time BBL winners, are "exploring its options" regarding a replacement for Mills.

Scorchers kick off their title defence against Sydney Sixers, a repeat of last season's final, on Saturday (December 17).
