Coffs Harbour: Sydney Sixers 151-4, Perth Scorchers 152-5 – Perth Scorchers won by five wickets

Perth Scorchers extended their lead at the top of the Big Bash to six points with a five-wicket win over Sydney Sixers at Coffs Harbour.

Both teams were missing players due to Covid-19, with Colin Munro and Jason Behrendorff isolating for the Scorchers and four cases confirmed in the Sixers camp.

However, losing Munro’s batting proved to be no issue for the Scorchers, with captain Ashton Turner stepping up with a 41-ball 69 to steer his side to victory.

Chasing 151, the BBL10 finalists lost Kurtis Patterson and Cameron Bancroft inside the powerplay and were soon 44 for 3 when Shadab Khan removed Laurie Evans (caught Jack Edwards) for 19 in the seventh over.

In response, Turner put his foot down, smashing 61 runs off 36 balls as part of a 91-run (58 balls) stand with Aaron Hardie to move his side to within 20 runs of victory.

He was eventually removed by Jackson Bird (caught Daniel Hughes) at the end of the 16th over but with 17 runs required off four overs, it proved to be a routine finale for Hardie (35), Ashton Agar (4) and Chris Sabburg (7), the latter hitting the winning single with six balls to spare in his first T20 outing since 2014.

Ben Dwarshuis (2 for 34), Bird (1 for 24), Hayden Kerr (1 for 30) and Khan (1 for 36) were the wicket-takers for the Sixers.

Earlier in the day, Josh Philippe and Justin Avendano shared a productive 56-run opening stand before the dismissal of the former in the eighth over sparked a top-order collapse.

Agar removed the opening pair in the space of four balls before Peter Hatzoglou pinned Edwards lbw as the Sixers slipped from 56 for 0 at the end of the seventh to 72 for 3 in the 12th.

Hughes and Jordan Silk shared a 29-run fourth-wicket stand off 26 balls to steady the ship before a 20-ball 35 from Dan Christian helped the defending champions post a solid 151 for 4 from their 20 overs.

His partnership with Silk (26 off 22) yielded 50 runs from 28 balls while Agar was the pick of the Scorchers bowlers, collecting 2 for 23. Matthew Kelly (1 for 37) and Hatzoglou (1 for 21) were the other wicket-takers while player of the match Turner conceded just 10 runs from his two overs.
