Adelaide Strikers celebrate reaching the Big Bash final

Adelaide Strikers edged a gripping Big Bash semi-final against Melbourne Renegades by one run.

After posting 178 for five from their 20 overs at the Adelaide Oval, thanks to an unbeaten 85 from Travis Head and Jake Weatherald's 57, the Strikers restricted their opponents to 177 for four.

Kieron Pollard needed three from the final ball to secure victory for the Renegades but failed to connect to the delivery, giving Adelaide their place in Sunday's final.

After winning the toss, Head elected to bat first, with Jono Dean given a rare chance at the top of the order in the absence of Alex Carey.

Dean hit each of the Strikers' first 19 runs before holing out to Pollard in the deep, but his departure only brought Head to the crease.

Travis Head made 85 for Adelaide

The Australia international mixed clever strokeplay with powerful hitting, striking eight fours and a six from 57 balls and sharing in a partnership of 104 for the second wicket with Weatherald.

Adelade's numbers four to seven only managed 12 runs between them but Head anchored the innings and ensured his side had a competitive total to defend.

In reply, the Renegades lost Cameron White cheaply but Marcus Harris and Tim Ludeman ensured their chase had a solid foundation with a second-wicket stand of 71.

While Harris, Ludeman, Tom Cooper, Dwayne Bravo and Pollard all made starts, however, none could make the telling contribution of Head.

And, after Pollard hit the first ball of the final over for four to add extra tension to an already dramatic affair under the lights in South Australia, Ben Laughlin kept his nerve to book the Strikers a place in Sunday's final.

They will take on Hobart Hurricanes for the right to be called Big Bash champions.
