Hobart Hurricanes up to third after thumping Melbourne Stars

Ben McDermott's half-century and three wickets each for Riley Meredith and Tom Rogers secures a second group win

Matthew Wade made 39 as part of an opening stand of 39, while D'Arcy Short (26) and Tim David (22*) made important cameos.

Andre Russell claimed three wickets but his four overs went at 12 an over. Glenn Maxwell and Clint Hinchliffe were expensive too.

That would end up being the Stars undoing, but they were given a five-run head start after David was adjudged to have intentionally run short at the end of the Hurricanes innings.

Marcus Stoinis his Riley Meredith down the ground for a maximum but was dismissed in the powerplay, before Maxwell followed with 55 on the board.

Joe Clarke his 52 from 40 deliveries but his departure in the 13th over was a significant moment in the chase.

The Player of the match Nathan Ellis then dismissed Joe Burns (22) and Andre Russell (12) to quell the pursuit further, as five wickets fell in the space of 13 balls.

Meredith recovered from some early punishment to claim 3 for 32 and Tom Rogers produced a fine final over, conceding just three and getting rid of Hilton Cartwright and Clint Hinchcliffe, as Stars finished on 156 for 9.

The victory lifts the Hurricanes into third in the table ahead of the Christmas Day break, with Stars down to seventh as part of the bottom two including city rivals Melbourne Renegades.
