MCG: Melbourne Stars 273-2, Hobart Hurricanes 167-6 – Melbourne Stars won by 106 runs

Glenn Maxwell's astonishing 154 off 64 balls, the highest-ever BBL score, ensured Melbourne Stars hammered Hobart Hurricanes in their final game.

On an historic night, Stars' score of 273 for 2 was the highest in competition history, while Maxwell's 26 boundaries (22 fours and four sixes) was another tournament record.

The captain's unbeaten masterclass was supported by a 31-ball 75 from Marcus Stoinis, the previous individual-score record-holder, while no Hurricanes bowler went at under 10 runs per over.

Hobart's doomed chase fell well short, but they had already qualified for Friday's Eliminator, where they will face Adelaide Strikers, while the Stars finish their campaign a point behind in sixth.

The carnage began in the second over, when Maxwell and Joe Clarke (35) pasted D'Arcy Short for 21.

Seven boundaries, alongside an all-run four, were hit in the next two overs to give the Stars the highest powerplay score of the season (63).

Maxwell reached fifty in 22 balls and his hundred came in the innings' 11th over off 41 balls, the second-fastest in the BBL.

He did not slow down, hitting a sensational reverse-scoop for six of a Mitchell Owen short ball in the following over.

By this stage, he had been joined by Stoinis, who hit six sixes, while the pair took more than 20 runs from each of the 14th, 18th and 19th overs in their 54-ball partnership of 131.

The Stars fell five short of the highest T20 total, scoring a comparatively minuscule 13 off the final over.

The worst victims were Sandeep Lamichhane (0 for 52 from four overs) and Josh Kann (1 for 40 from 2 overs), but no bowler escaped punishment.

Regular wickets hampered Hobart's near-impossible chase, though Ben McDermott played well for his 55 of 33 balls.

He fell to Brody Couch in the 12th over to make the score 94 for 4, with the Stars 142 for 2 at the same stage.

Couch (3 for 30) was the pick of the Melbourne bowlers on Maxwell's night, but it is the Hurricanes whose tournament continues.
