Bat review: Gunn & Moore Hypa 909

Like most GM bats, the Hypa feels properly curated and that is reflected in a price north of £275

RRP: £350, Weight: 2lb 10oz, Edges: 38mm

This is what Gunn & Moore do best. A beautifully smooth blade of Grade 1 English Willow with ample grain distribution, tapered edges and a fetching colour scheme at the top of the face.

You could drop in at the Nottingham factory at any time and pick up a bat along these lines.

Like most GM bats, the Hypa feels properly curated. As Tester Nick said: “It doesn’t feel like the kind of bat you'd just be able to buy from a shop.”

That is reflected in a price north of £275.

All our testers were universal in praise of the pick-up and feel. As Frankie said: “I like the profile – very full, nice weight, not too light.”

The testers all enjoyed the middle, though Frankie diverted from the majority opinion in saying, “If you hit in the middle it went but hard to find otherwise.”

And Tommy, who has a thing about handles, suggested he would need to put another grip on to feel in control of his strokes: “It had a narrower handle than I'd like, which makes me feel like I have less control of my strokes.”

James, however, had less doubt that in the hands of a top-class player it would “go like the clappers”.
