Shane Warne has said he would welcome the opportunity of a role with beleaguered Cricket Australia.

The governing body is in the middle of a mass upheaval in the aftermath of The Ethics Centre's review into cricketing culture Down Under, with chairman David Peever, director Mark Taylor and high performance manager Pat Howard all stepping down from their roles in recent days.

Warne, the country's record wicket-taker, revealed he has previously made himself available to Cricket Australia should they wish to tap into his experience of the elite game and in a Herald Sun column he proposed specialist coaching positions for spin and seam bowlers.

“I put my hand up to Pat Howard a few times, told him I was available if they needed me,” Warne wrote. “I’ve always been happy to get involved in any role if Cricket Australia thought I could help the team. I’m sure all the ex-players would be the same.

Shane Warne has offered his services to Cricket Australia

“We’ve got a lot of spinners coming through who I’ve helped in an informal role and I’m more than happy to help in a formal basis if required. Why not ask Glenn McGrath, offer him a contract to help with the fast bowlers?”

The idea was supported by former Australia head coach Darren Lehmann on Friday, who said Cricket Australia "would be mad" not to explore Warne's offer.

“He knows the game inside-out, so if he wants to get involved in cricket, there’s no problem with that at all,” Lehmann told 3AW.

“It’s about which position.

“He knows more about the game than I do, especially spin bowling.”
